January 2011 is upon us. In this brisk first month of the decade, Public Domain marks two-thirds-of-a-year serving up carefully prepared cups of fine seasonal coffees. Now, with a new year of possibilities ahead of us, we are delighted to offer four new ways to enjoy Public Domain coffee.

It's that time of year again...competition season. Public Domain will be sending Jon Freihofer and me to the Northwest Regional Barista Competition, to be held January 28th – 30th 2011 in Tacoma, Washington. Jon previously competed in the Midwest Regional Barista Competition in 2009 representing his former employer, Coffee Ethic in Springfield Missouri, and PT's Coffee from Topeka, Kansas. I competed in the Northwest Regional in January 2009 representing my former employer, Little Red Bike Cafe and Courier Coffee, both located in Portland.

On Sunday, September 19th 2010, we closed our doors a bit early for the day to have our first ever in house Barista Competition. The purpose of the competition was to find the two Baristas who would be going to the NW Regionals in January. We had 5 Barista’s fighting for the chance to go.  After two months of planning and preparation, the results were totally awesome! These guys brought their best game to the table and it was a tough decision.

Ahhh…Esmeralda. Regardless of the hype surrounding this coffee from Hacienda la Esmeralda in Panama, it truly is the best coffee I’ve ever tasted. Our Mario Carnaval lot #1 is very floral in aromatics with jasmine and bergamot primarily with a lemony acidity and some red fruit in the flavor. After cooling a bit, a very nice lime sweetness appears and complements the berry, pear and honey also on the palate.

Miguel and Guillermo Menéndez, producers of our El Salvador Las Delicias, stopped by this morning—what an unexpected treat! In addition to giving us a photo tour of their lovely farms, they told us colorful stories about the coffee growing tradition in their family and their country. We were intrigued by the amazing attention to detail in the production process. It’s no wonder that the Las Delicias is so juicy!

Coffee is one of the most grown, traded, prepared and consumed beverage in the world. More than 70 countries on our planet partake of the dark brew, and most do it hot. I mean they heat it. Piping hot coffee is familiar to us like apple pie and Christmas, but for years I have counted myself among the passionate subset of coffee drinkers who like it chilled. This is not to say that I don't enjoy a steaming cup of French Press or warm, foamy cappuccino, but every once in a while (and with increasing frequency as our days grow sunnier) I have to have my coffee over ice.

As the date approaches for the opening of the shop, I find myself thinking more and more about why we're doing what we do. Why do we care so much about coffee? Isn't it just a beverage?

I started working at the cozy café on the corner of SW Broadway and Alder back in April 2005 when it was, and had been for 7 or 8 years, the Portland Coffee House. It was the kind of coffee shop you would see in some movie from the 90’s with comfy couches, crazy art all over  the walls, every seat filled with people staring blankly or not so blankly at their computers and a menu that seemed to go on forever. While the coffee was good, we seemed to really only rival Starbucks serving drinks with lots of sugar and flavors and a lot of drinks that really had nothing to do with coffee at all.
